Beauty: A New Line from Douglas Labs to Support Skin, Hair & Nail Health

Beauty by DL is a new product line created by Douglas Laboratories®, a global leader in developing high-quality, science-based, and innovative nutritional supplements for the last 65 years.

It’s no secret that the health of your skin, hair and nails is a reflection of your internal health. With this in mind, Douglas Laboratories® designed the Beauty by DL line to support clear, vibrant skin, thicker hair, and stronger nails from within.

Backed by clinical science and innovative technologies, the new line consists of five unique supplements that target different aspects of skin, hair, and nail health and appearance.

Let’s take a closer look at each of the five supplements and see how they can work together to contribute to healthy and beautiful skin, hair, and nails.

Omega Beauty

Vibrant and healthy skin requires a proper barrier that helps lock in moisture and protect the delicate collagen and elastin fibers underneath.

However the skin barrier is under constant assault from many different environmental stressors. One of the main sources of damage is UV rays from the sun, which can cause inflammation and collagen breakdown and can disrupt the skin’s moisture barrier. This results in dry skin, skin discoloration, and wrinkling.

Omega Beauty is designed to prevent this damage by protecting the skin barrier and shielding the skin from harmful UV rays.

Containing a unique blend of coriander and black currant seed oils, essential fatty acids, and powerful antioxidants including vitamin C and E, it helps protect the skin from sun exposure and keep the skin hydrated.

Omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA found in Omega Beauty help improve skin barrier function, increase collagen production and moisture retention, and protect against sun damage (1, 2).

Vitamin C helps protect the skin from UV damage and increases the production of collagen, which provides structure to the skin and helps prevent fine lines and wrinkles. Vitamin E is another important antioxidant found in the skin that protects against sun damage and the effects of aging (3).

Omega Beauty also contains black currant seed oil, an antioxidant-packed oil rich in gamma-linolenic acid. In one study, individuals suffering from dry, inflamed skin due to eczema saw a significant improvement in skin hydration and a reduction in inflammatory markers after supplementing with gamma-linolenic acid (4).

Coriander seed oil is another source of skin-healthy antioxidants.

Together, the ingredients in Omega Beauty help improve skin appearance and health by:

  • Protecting the skin from sun damage
  • Maintaining the skin’s moisture barrier and improving hydration
  • Reducing inflammation and protecting against oxidative stress

Hair Growth+

Hair growth can be negatively influenced by many different factors including genetics, vitamin and mineral deficiencies, and chronic inflammation.

Shampoos and conditioners can only do so much when it comes to improving the appearance, growth, quality of your hair.

Healthy, thick, and plentiful hair starts from within.

Hair Growth+ combines vital nutrients and powerful herbal extracts to promote hair quality and thickness, stimulate hair growth, and reduce hair loss.

Hair loss affects millions of people throughout the world, however, current treatment options often come with unpleasant side effects. It’s not surprising then that people commonly seek natural and safer alternatives.

That’s why Hair Growth+ contains AnaGain Nu, a natural extract of pea sprouts that stimulates hair growth and reduces hair loss.

In a clinical trial, AnaGain Nu reduced hair loss by 34% and improved hair quality after just two months and there were no reported side effects (5). Researches discovered the extract works by turning on genes responsible for the growth of new hair and reducing inflammation in follicles which can slow hair growth.

Hair Growth+ also contains green tea extract and grape seed extract to help reduce oxidative stress and inflammation and improve follicle health. Research suggests that these extracts can shift the hair cycle from the shedding phase to the growth phase (6, 7).

The formula also includes two important nutrients to support hair health: taurine and zinc.

Taurine is an amino acid that improves hair health by protecting follicles from inflammation and oxidative stress. It’s also rich in sulfur which is a key component of healthy hair (8).

Zinc is an incredibly important mineral for hair health and growth. Zinc deficiency interrupts normal hair growth and may cause accelerated hair loss (9). Zinc also helps with brittle nails by strengthening them (10).

The unique ingredients in Hair Growth+ combine to help:

  • Stimulate the growth of new hair
  • Reduce hair loss
  • Improve hair quality and thickness
  • Strengthen brittle nails

Skin Clarify

The skin is especially vulnerable to oxidative stress that can come from chronic inflammation, poor diet, or excessive sun exposure. This can result in skin discoloration, poor complexion, and uneven skin texture.

Skin Clarify was designed to combat oxidative stress to rejuvenate dull skin and support a clear complexion. Packed with powerful antioxidants and skin-healthy vitamins and minerals, it helps bolster the skin’s defenses and gives you that healthy glow.

The formula includes N-acetylcysteine (NAC), a potent antioxidant that increases the body’s supply of the master antioxidant glutathione. Glutathione is the one of the main defences the skin has against oxidative stress but when it becomes depleted the skin can start looking dull, dry, and tired (11).

NAC isn’t just beneficial for skin health, it’s also effective in increasing nail growth (12).

In addition to NAC, Skin Clarify contains grape seed extract which has unique antioxidants called procyanidins that protect the skin from UV light and oxidative stress (13).

Skin Clarify provides further antioxidant support with vitamins A and C and selenium.

Vitamin A is converted into a compound called retinoic acid that has been shown in clinical trials to promote healthy skin by increasing collagen synthesis. Selenium plays important roles in the skin including protecting against oxidative stress and helping skin cells repair (14). Both nutrients help keep skin smooth and free from wrinkles and fine lines.

With Skin Clarify, Douglas Laboratories® has created an advanced antioxidant supplement designed to help:

  • Increase the growth of nails
  • Protect the skin from oxidative stress
  • Support a clear complexion
  • Reduce fine lines and wrinkles and improve skin texture

Skin Probiotic+

Science has only recently confirmed the intimate connection between the gut microbiome and the skin, known as the gut-skin axis. It turns out that what we consume as well as the health of our gut has a huge impact on our skin health.

This has sparked interest in discovering probiotics strains that are particularly beneficial for the skin.

Skin Probiotic+ contains two unique probiotic strains (Lactobacillus paracasei and Lactobacillus johnsonii) that have been shown in clinical trials to help keep skin hydrated and promote healthy skin aging. It combines these probiotics with powerful antioxidant carotenoids including beta-carotene, astaxanthin, and lycopene to help protect the skin from oxidative stress and environmental stressors.

In one study, supplementing with Lactobacillus paracasei improved skin hydration and reduced inflammation. The benefits seem to stem from an improved skin microbiome, which is vital to a healthy skin barrier (15).

Multiple clinical trials have found that Lactobacillus johnsonii improves skin barrier integrity and protects against UV damage that can accelerate skin aging. It works by increasing skin cell density, reducing inflammation, and boosting skin defenses. It’s even more effective for skin health when combined with beta-carotene and lycopene (16).

Astaxanthin is a carotenoid pigment found in salmon that gives the fish its characteristic pink color. It has potent antioxidant properties that translate to an impressive array of benefits for the skin.

Clinical research has found that astaxanthin protects against UV damage, improves skin texture and tone, increases moisture retention, and even reduces the depth of wrinkles. In one trial, participants taking astaxanthin took longer to burn when exposed to UV light (17).

To sum it up, Skin Probiotic+ utilizes cutting-edge research in microbiome science to benefit skin health in multiple ways including:

  • Improving skin barrier function and skin hydration
  • Improving gut microbiome
  • Protecting the skin from oxidative stress

Beauty Essentials

Healthy skin, hair, and nails requires a healthy diet containing the right balance of vitamins and minerals.

However, sometimes diet alone isn’t enough to cover all of our nutritional needs. Stress, poor absorption, and depleted soils can increase our requirements for certain micronutrients.

That’s where Beauty Essentials can help.

Beauty Essentials is a comprehensive, broad-spectrum multivitamin and mineral supplement combined with powerful antioxidant extracts designed to support all facets of health. The formula includes the most bioavailable forms of nutrients so they are properly absorbed and utilized by the body.

Beauty Essentials contains the entire spectrum of B vitamins to help boost energy levels and vitality. Biotin, also known as vitamin B7, has been shown to boost hair and nail growth in people that are deficient (18).

It also contains important nutrients that are commonly deficient such as vitamin D, magnesium, and potassium. Magnesium is involved in over 300 processes in the body and is important for skin hydration, cellular repair, and reducing inflammation (19).

N-acetylcysteine and alpha-lipoic acid are included in Beauty Essentials to increase glutathione levels and help protect tissues including the skin from oxidative stress and inflammation.

A polyphenol blend of green tea, blueberry, pomegranate, grape, and olive extracts provides additional antioxidant support to quench free radicals that can damage the hair, skin, and nails.

Polyphenols from green tea are also effective in controlling blood sugar levels. High blood sugar levels result in collagen cross-linking in the skin, which occurs when a sugar molecule binds to a collagen protein. This causes collagen to become stiff and brittle and leaves the skin vulnerable to the wear and tear of everyday life (20, 21).

Rounding out the antioxidant arsenal is a blend of the skin-protective carotenoids lutein, zeaxanthin, and lycopene. One study found that the combination of lutein and zeaxanthin improved skin tone and skin elasticity over a 12-week period (22).

To recap, Beauty Essentials provides vital micronutrient and herbal extracts to help:

  • Increase antioxidant defenses and reduce inflammation
  • Prevent nutrient deficiencies
  • Boost energy levels
  • Support overall health and wellness
