View full detailsAbout Turmeric & Curcumin
Turmeric is a golden root used in cooking and traditional herbalism for thousands of years. Its key compounds, curcuminoids, support a healthy inflammation response, joint comfort and antioxidant protection.
Curcumin is poorly absorbed on its own, so most practitioner formulas use enhanced-absorption forms. This collection includes turmeric and curcumin capsules, softgels and liquids from Thorne, Pure Encapsulations, NutriDyn, Integrative Therapeutics, Gaia Herbs PRO and more.
Turmeric vs Curcumin: How to Choose
- Turmeric root: Whole turmeric contains only a small percentage of curcumin. It is a gentle, traditional choice.
- Standardized curcumin: Concentrated extracts, often standardized to 95% curcuminoids, deliver much more curcumin per serving.
- Enhanced-absorption forms: Phytosome (Meriva), BCM-95, liposomal and formulas with black pepper (BioPerine) are designed to improve absorption.
- Combination formulas: Curcumin paired with boswellia, omega-3s or other botanicals for broader joint support.
Turmeric and curcumin are often taken with omega-3 fish oil and MSM. Explore more in anti-inflammatory supplements and joint support.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between turmeric and curcumin?
Curcumin is the main active compound in turmeric root. Turmeric supplements contain the whole root, while curcumin supplements are concentrated extracts with much more of the active compounds.
What is the best absorbed curcumin?
Look for an enhanced-absorption form. Phytosome, BCM-95, liposomal and black pepper formulas are all designed to absorb better than plain curcumin powder.
When should I take turmeric?
Take it with a meal that contains some fat. Curcumin is fat soluble, so food helps absorption.
Can I take curcumin with medications?
Check with your practitioner first. Curcumin can interact with some medications, including blood thinners.
