Nordic Naturals was founded in 1995 by Joar Opheim in the Arctic Norway. Nordic Naturals operates as a family-owned company and is privately owned. Nordica Naturals primarily specializes in Omega-3s supplements.

While in California for his MBA, Joar Opheim noticed that the pure, high quality omega-rich cod liver oil that Norwegiens enjoyed was not common in the United States. This gave him the inspiration to establish Nordic Naturals. He wanted to offer the same high quality omega-rich cod liver oil to the United States and other countries.

In 1999, Nordic Naturals launched Children’s DHA. Children’s DHA were the first of its kind to appeal to children as chewable omega-3 softgels. In 2003, Nordic Naturals expanded their children’s line by launching Nordic Berries, a multivitamin for children.

Initially, Nordic Naturals added vitamin D3 to their omega oils to help individuals with vitamin D deficiency, but did not specialized or developed vitamin D3 supplements. However in 2010, Nordic Naturals launched their own vitamin D3 vitamins and supplements to expand their product line.

In 2010, Nordic Naturals also opened their own facilities to bottle and encapsulate their vitamins and supplements. In 2013, their manufacturing plant opened in Arctic Norway.
