Benfotiamine is a lipid-soluble form of thiamin that is better absorbed and has a longer duration of action than water-soluble thiamin. It works by activating transketolase activity, which helps to convert harmful glucose metabolites and positively affects the formation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs). Benfotiamine supports peripheral nerve health and may also support vascular health, including the microvasculature of the retina and kidney.
