As you age, your body tissues suffer from oxidative stress due to the process of oxidation. Oxidation occurs when molecules within your body lose electrons to electrically-charged molecules of oxygen in your blood stream. These electrically charged oxygen molecules are called "free radicals" and have the potential to cause damage to cellular DNA. Antioxidant supplements can help you to sustain in just the right amount to balance the free radical activity in the body. They are also essential for cellular detoxification, utilizing energy, providing support for the cardiovascular system, maintaining blood pressure levels, and supporting immune function.
When the body converts food into energy, it creates free radicals. These free radicals are unstable molecules that are a byproduct of the energy conversion process. Because free radicals are unstable, they try to steal electrons from other molecules. Unfortunately, the theft of electrons from other molecules can cause a chain reaction that damages important cellular components, such as DNA.
Antioxidants are molecules that are capable of protecting cells from free radicals. Antioxidants are able to terminate harmful chain reactions by supplying electrons to free radicals, which effectively stabilizes the potentially harmful free radical molecules.
Beta-carotene, vitamin E and vitamin C are examples of antioxidants, which can be found in many fruits and vegetables. Because of their important function, which is preventing, slowing and repairing damage to the body's cells, antioxidants are essential for optimum health.
In addition, adding antioxidant supplements to your diet can enhance your immune system, maintain your healthy eyesight and promote healthy cardiovascular function. Antioxidant supplementation is also a good option for people who suffer from an antioxidant deficiency.
